Hi and welcome,

I'm Master Frank, owner of Lions Panzek Martial Arts in Winfield, Illinois.

There's a moment I see almost every week that never gets old.

A family opens the front door.

A child peeks inside.

They notice the uniforms. The black belts. The students warming up.

Then, almost instinctively, they step a little closer to Mom or Dad.

I've seen it hundreds of times.

Some children grip a parent's hand a little tighter.

Some whisper, "I don't know anyone."

Some look around the room convinced everyone else already knows exactly what they're doing.

Here's the part I wish every new student knew.

Everyone in that room was once the new kid.

Even the black belt helping teach class.

Even the confident teenager leading warm-ups.

Even me!

We all had a first day.

Starting Is Brave

People often think courage looks dramatic.

Movies have convinced us courage is loud, fearless, and larger than life.

Real courage usually looks much quieter.

It's walking into a room where you don't know anyone.

It's raising your hand when you're unsure of the answer.

It's trying something you might not be good at.

It's putting on a white belt when everyone else seems more experienced.

Those moments may not make headlines.

But they build character.

Nobody Expects Perfection

One thing I tell new students is this:

"You are not expected to know everything today."

That's why you're here.

Imagine expecting a first-grade student to solve calculus problems.

Sounds silly, doesn't it?

Yet children often expect themselves to be good at something before they've had the chance to learn it.

In martial arts, we don't expect beginners to perform like advanced students.

We expect them to learn.

Those are two very different things.

The Kindness of a Community

One of the things that makes me proudest isn't watching an advanced kick.

It's watching an experienced student welcome someone new.

A smile.

A high-five.

Helping a younger student find their place in line.

Cheering when someone earns their first stripe.

Those moments remind me that martial arts is more than techniques.

It's a community.

Every student has the opportunity to become the person they once needed on their own first day.

That's a powerful lesson.

A Lesson for Parents

Children face "new kid" moments throughout life.

A new classroom.

A new teacher.

A new sport.

A new job someday.

A new neighborhood.

As parents, it's natural to want to make those moments easier.

But we can't remove every unfamiliar situation from their lives.

Nor should we.

Instead, we can help them discover something even more valuable:

They can handle new beginnings.

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is confidence that isn't based on knowing what's going to happen.

It's confidence based on knowing they'll figure it out.

Try This at Home

The next time your child faces something unfamiliar, resist the urge to immediately solve it for them.

Instead, ask:

"What's one small step you can take?"

Maybe it's introducing themselves.

Maybe it's asking one question.

Maybe it's simply walking through the door.

Big journeys often begin with very ordinary first steps.

What We Hope Every Student Learns

At Lions Panzek Martial Arts, we teach forms, self-defense, kicks, and blocks.

But we also hope every student leaves with this belief:

"I may feel nervous."

"I may not know anyone."

"I may not know how to do it...yet."

"But I can still take the first step."

That lesson reaches far beyond the dojang.

It shows up in classrooms.

On athletic fields.

In job interviews.

In relationships.

And throughout life.

Final Thought

Years from now, your child probably won't remember exactly what we practiced during their first class.

But they'll remember how they felt.

They'll remember being welcomed.

They'll remember discovering they were capable of more than they expected.

Most importantly, they'll remember that being the new kid wasn't something to fear.

It was simply the first chapter of becoming something greater.

Every black belt begins with a white belt.

Every expert begins as a beginner.

Every journey begins with one brave step through the door.

Sometimes the bravest thing a child will do all week is simply walk into a room they've never been in before.

See you on the mat,

Master Frank
