Hi and welcome,

I’m Master Frank, owner of Lions Panzek Martial Arts in Winfield, Illinois.

I started Lessons from the Dojang because after years of teaching children and working with families, I’ve seen something important:

Martial arts is about much more than kicks and punches.

It builds confidence, focus, resilience, respect, and self-control.

And for many children—including those with different learning styles or special needs—that growth can be life-changing.

This newsletter is here to share practical ideas, encouragement, and real-world lessons for parents who want to help their children grow stronger from the inside out.

One lesson for this week

Every parent has heard it.

“I don’t want to go.”

“I don’t feel like it.”

“I’m too tired.”

“It’s too hard.”

“I don’t want to practice.”

And let’s be honest, adults say the same thing. We just dress it up in fancier language like, “I’m prioritizing recovery today.”

But for children, that “I don’t want to” moment is important.

Because many times, that is where growth begins.

Discipline is not built when everything feels easy.

Confidence is not built only when a child is already excited.

Resilience is not built only when a child is comfortable.

Those qualities are built when a child learns:

“I can still try.”

“I can still show up.”

“I can do something even when I don’t feel like doing it.”

That does not mean children should be pushed endlessly or ignored when they are truly tired, sick, overwhelmed, or struggling. Parents know their children best.

But there is a difference between a child needing rest and a child facing normal resistance.

Sometimes the hardest part is not the class.

It is getting through the door.

I have seen it many times in the dojang.

A child comes in quiet, grumpy, nervous, or convinced they do not want to be there.

Then class begins.

They warm up.

They practice.

They laugh.

They hit a target.

They earn a correction.

They try again.

And by the end, that same child who did not want to come in is smiling, proud, and suddenly has plenty of energy.

Funny how that works.

The lesson is not that children should always feel motivated.

The lesson is that motivation often shows up after action begins.

That is a powerful lesson for life.

Because someday, that same child will not feel like studying.

They will not feel like apologizing.

They will not feel like trying again after failing.

They will not feel like doing the hard thing.

And if they have practiced showing up anyway, they will have a tool many adults still struggle to build.

The goal is not to create children who never complain.

Good luck with that.

The goal is to help children learn that feelings matter, but feelings do not always have to be in charge.

Sometimes the best growth happens right after the words:

“I don’t want to.”

A question for parents

The next time your child says, “I don’t want to,” pause before assuming the answer should automatically be yes or no.

Ask yourself:

Are they truly overwhelmed, or are they facing normal resistance?

Do they need rest, or do they need encouragement?

Is this a moment to step back, or a moment to help them step forward?

Parenting does not come with a perfect script.

But helping children move through small moments of resistance can prepare them for bigger challenges later.

From the dojang to daily life

In martial arts, children learn that showing up matters.

They learn that effort matters.

They learn that they can be nervous and still try.

They can be frustrated and still practice.

They can make mistakes and still improve.

They can say, “I don’t want to,” and still discover, “I’m glad I did.”

That is not just a martial arts lesson.

That is a life lesson.

Want to help your child practice that lesson?

If your child has trouble getting started, trying something new, or sticking with something when it gets hard, martial arts can help.

At Lions Panzek Martial Arts, we help children build confidence, discipline, focus, respect, and resilience one class at a time.

As a thank-you for reading Lessons from the Dojang, we offer a 2-week trial for newsletter readers so kids can experience it firsthand.
