Hi and welcome,
I’m Master Frank, owner of Lions Panzek Martial Arts in Winfield, Illinois.
After years of working with children and families, I’ve noticed something that comes up again and again:
When a child struggles with behavior, most people immediately think…
they need more discipline.
But here’s the problem:
Most people misunderstand what discipline actually is.
One lesson for this week
Discipline isn’t something you do to a child—
it’s something you build inside them.
What I see all the time
A child is having trouble focusing in class.
They’re talking out of turn, not following directions, maybe getting frustrated.
The parent’s response is usually to correct it right away:
“Stop doing that.”
“Pay attention.”
“If you don’t listen, there will be consequences.”
And while that might stop the behavior for the moment…
…it rarely fixes it long-term.
Because stopping behavior isn’t the same as building discipline.
Oh, and don’t be that parent who yells directions to your student in class. It splits their attention. Let the instructor take care of it.
What actually works
In martial arts, we take a different approach.
We don’t rely on constant correction or punishment.
We build discipline through:
Consistency
The expectations don’t change based on mood or the day.
Structure
Every class follows a clear format. Students know what’s coming.
Accountability
Students learn that their actions matter—and they take ownership over time.
Over weeks and months, something powerful happens:
They begin to correct themselves.
The shift most parents miss
Punishment can control behavior in the moment, but it WILL happen again and eventually get worse.
But discipline is what allows a child to control themselves.
And that only comes from repetition, guidance, and clear expectations—not fear.
Something you can try this week
Pick one simple expectation for your child. Something SIMPLE like put their dirty clothes in the hamper and not just on the floor. Not something overwhelming like Pick up all the sticks in the backyard every day and arrange them by length.
Keep it clear. Keep it consistent.
And most importantly—follow through calmly every time.
No lectures. No escalating emotions.
Just steady, predictable leadership.
That’s how discipline is built.
In martial arts, we don’t just correct behavior—we train discipline every class.
That’s why it sticks.
We offer a 2-week trial for families who read this newsletter so kids can experience it firsthand.
In future issues, I’ll share simple, practical lessons on confidence, discipline, bullying prevention, and how martial arts supports children of all abilities.
Thanks for being here, and if you found this helpful, feel free to share it with another parent or family who might benefit.
