Hi and welcome,

I’m Master Frank, owner of Lions Panzek Martial Arts in Winfield, Illinois.

I started Lessons from the Dojang because after years of teaching children and working with families, I’ve seen something important:

Martial arts is about much more than kicks and punches.

It builds confidence, focus, resilience, respect, and self-control.

And for many children—including those with different learning styles or special needs—that growth can be life-changing.

This newsletter is here to share practical ideas, encouragement, and real-world lessons for parents who want to help their children grow stronger from the inside out.

One lesson for this week

Confidence doesn’t come from constant praise.

It comes from this:

“I did something hard… and I got through it.”

That might look like:

  • speaking up in class

  • trying again after failing

  • walking into something new while nervous

  • sticking with something that feels uncomfortable

One of the most powerful phrases we can give kids is:

You can do hard things.

At our school, progress looks different for every child.
For one student, it’s earning a new belt.
For another, it’s stepping onto the mat with courage.

Many times I’ve had new students come in the school and they really want to try a class but they are shy and scared. The first time or two they may just watch. After a couple visits they may move to getting on the mat with a parent. Then at last they are on the mat by themselves just like they have been there all along. This can only happen with support and encouragement to help them take little steps to eventually reach a goal. This also doesn’t always happen as quickly as we would like and according to our timeline. The attempt is the victory and every victory counts. Be patient, stay encouraging, and be supportive.

In future issues, I’ll share simple, practical lessons on confidence, discipline, bullying prevention, and how martial arts supports children of all abilities.

Thanks for being here, and if you found this helpful, feel free to share it with another parent or family who might benefit.
