Hi and welcome,
I'm Master Frank, owner of Lions Panzek Martial Arts in Winfield, Illinois.
Every instructor has experienced it.
Two students learn the exact same technique.
Both make the same mistake.
One student hears the correction, nods, smiles, and tries again.
The other crosses their arms, gets frustrated, or insists they were doing it right.
A month later, the first student has improved dramatically.
The second is still struggling.
What made the difference?
It wasn't talent.
It wasn't strength.
It wasn't age.
It was something much more important.
One student was teachable.
Being Corrected Isn't the Same as Being Criticized
Let's be honest.
Nobody enjoys being told they need to improve.
Adults don't.
Children certainly don't.
It's easy to hear correction as criticism.
But in martial arts, we try to teach students something different.
A correction isn't someone saying you're not good enough.
A correction is someone investing in your growth.
Think about that for a moment.
If an instructor takes the time to help fix your stance, improve your balance, or sharpen your technique, it's because they believe you're capable of doing it better.
That's a compliment disguised as hard work.
The Students Who Improve the Fastest
After years of teaching, I've noticed a pattern.
The students who progress the quickest aren't always the strongest athletes.
They aren't always the most coordinated.
They aren't even always the most confident.
They're the ones who respond to feedback with one simple attitude:
"Let me try that again."
That's powerful.
Instead of protecting their pride, they protect their progress.
And over time, those small adjustments add up to remarkable growth.
This Lesson Reaches Far Beyond the Mat
Being teachable is a life skill.
A child who can accept coaching from an instructor is more likely to accept guidance from a teacher.
Later, they'll be better prepared to learn from a supervisor at work.
To improve in a hobby.
To strengthen a relationship.
To grow throughout life.
The people who continue learning are the people who continue improving.
No matter their age.
What Parents Can Do at Home
When your child receives correction, resist the temptation to rescue them from every uncomfortable feeling.
Instead, help them reframe it.
You might ask:
"What was your instructor trying to help you improve?"
Or,
"What's one thing you'll do differently next time?"
Those questions keep the focus on learning instead of embarrassment.
Children begin to understand that feedback isn't something to fear.
It's something to use.
The Best Black Belts Still Learn
One of my favorite things about martial arts is that learning never ends.
I've been training for decades.
I still receive corrections.
I still ask questions.
I still discover better ways to do things.
That's not a sign of weakness.
It's a sign that growth never stops.
The day we believe we've learned everything is the day we stop improving.
That's true in martial arts.
It's true in business.
It's true in parenting.
And it's true in life.
A Family Challenge This Week
This week, when someone in your family receives advice or correction, try replacing the first response with curiosity.
Instead of,
"But I..."
Try,
"Can you show me?"
Or,
"Thanks. I'll work on that."
Those simple words create room for growth.
Children notice when adults are teachable too.
And as we've talked about before, children often learn as much from what we model as from what we say.
Final Thought
Talent is wonderful.
Confidence is valuable.
Hard work is essential.
But one quality quietly ties them all together.
The willingness to learn.
Children who stay teachable don't have to know everything.
They simply have to stay open to becoming better than they were yesterday.
In martial arts, every correction is an opportunity.
Every lesson is a gift.
And every class is another chance to grow.
That's a superpower worth developing.
See you on the mat,
Master Frank
